An Octoroon - Branden Jacobs- Jenkins
Nottingham Playhouse Prize

For this project we were asked to pick between three speculative design projects on offer, which were all very different from one another. This term is aimed to focus on research, exploration and to create an industry standard/ professional-like final output while collaborating with directors and professionals linked with the chosen project. I chose the play An Octoroon which is working with the Nottingham Playhouse. Picking this project, I want to gain experience with working with professionals on a design project and gain an insight into how the designing process works in a professional setting. I will have the opportunity to use skills I have learnt over the last two years and collect them all together this project. The Nottingham Playhouse theatre has a range of opportunities for set design which will work well for this abstract play as there is so many elements involved in the show. The play will be exciting and challenging to design for due to all the racial issues discussed within and how relevant it is today. I wanted this to show in my design and possibly incorporate some of today’s issues to show where there is contrast or where there are similarities.
